so after emailing with simonini directly, we have come to the conclusion that of the two wires coming from the magneto and going to the cdi box, the yellow one can be split to also run the lights. i tried it out and sure enough! it works! now to work on getting the bike tuned proper!

hmmm i might be very interested.. how will the ground clearance be for the pipe? my calibrata is kinda too low for my liking. if i go down on the track, it gets all banged up.
i work for a company that builds custom pipes for mopeds (http://motomaticmopeds.com), though they don’t currently build one for the ciao. their handmade pipes go for around $280, so i imagine yours must be somewhere around that, except i’d also have to pay to have it shipped to the us! expensive!
anyway, i could be interested if the performance is there, and if the ground clearance is good! it would be nice to be able to corner hard at the track and not hit my pipe!
also, will you be making the dyno graphs available to view on the internet? will you be putting your pipe up against the fabrizi and calibrata on the dyno?

haha josh, i dunno about haveing a motomatic on the ciao, it’s done for racing and only the race bikes get free pipes! but as much as a fabrizi would cost me to get it here, i might as well buy a motomatic for it.. so who knows?

thanks cris, i may do that!

that’s the shim that is used to make the bottom race fit tightly on the steerer tube.

all of the hondas are running derbi and puch kits! they are nearly untouchable! i was placing ok on my ciao with a modified pinasco, but the derbi motors/kits are just too fast! i can’t keep up either!
i’m afraid i am retiring the ciao from racing next year. i think i am going to build some kind of crazy bike with lots of parts coming from lots of different mopeds!
nerd speed will probably be the only vespa on the track next year! kind of sad, really.. 🙁
awesome job on this build josh, i was sooo stoked to finally see you and the bike out on the track! i waited all season for it! even though the performance was poor, i know it’s going to be a whole different bike next year! i can’t wait!

oh, ps, did you remove the blue ring from your variator, or did it fly off? i know i told you mine flew off like 3 times and i ended up leaving it off all together

after messing with both a 24oko and a 24mikuni, it looks like i’m going mikuni. it’s a smaller carb and should fit much better, and it is a better carb over all. it is only about $30 more expensive, so it’s a no-brainer. i hope to have this done by the next race, oct 3!

i have a 20mm dellorto si carb, it is a down draft flat slide that came on some vespa small frame scooters back in the 1970’s i think. i’ve though about using it, but it’s even smaller than the dellorto i’m currently running.
the oko carbs are pretty good and very cheap, $58 for a 24mm. i’ll probably go that rout, though i’ve wanted to look into the bigger pumper carbs like the tillotson. plus side of a tillotson is no jets! just screws to adjust mixture!
at this point i just know i need to get my top speed up more to keep up with the top bikes on the race track! bigger carb, higher exhaust port and a calculated pipe and i think i’ll be there!

awesome! i looked forever for at least some photos and i failed, thanks so much for posting some! what kit is on that white bike, do you know? 28 is huuuuge!
it looks like the white bike’s motor is moved further forward to make room, is that correct? i was considering that, but i’m not sure what i would do about belt length then. i was thinking of rotating the motor, pitching the front down and the rear up, ever so slightly, just enough to make room for the carb.
i knew you could probably stuff a bigger carb in a cita or possibly other vespa with a subframe swingarm, but i figured ciao would be more difficult.

i’m running the pinasco 46 with 1mm chopped off the top of the cylinder and a thick base gasket to raise the ports 1mm, and i opened up the exhaust port big time.
i run the head that came with the kit, i’ve flattened it some but not changed the squish or anything.
malossi cases, port mapped to the pinasco, otherwise standard.
malossi crank
dellorto 21phbg race carb, i milled the spigot off the back of the carb and drilled a couple holes in it and tapped them, like the 19mm carb setup for this case from malossi. i think i have a 96 main jet in it now, and it’s kind of rich.
i made my own intake plate, rather than using the malossi one. i don’t like the malossi one, it forces the fuel/air mixture through a funny S bend and hampers the flow. mine is straight through.
i run the polini variator with 3 7.7g weights and the malossi yellow spring in the rear pulley and the malossi variated ciao belt.
ktm 50 cdi ignition, i had to change the taper in the tiny flywheel to fit the malossi crank. i use the plastic fan from a kenitic flywheel (just the fan, not the whole flywheel) with a custom adapter to cool the engine.
a simonini calibrata pipe
2.5 tire in the rear
and i’ve cut off every little piece of metal i don’t need to make the bike really light.
i think that’s it, i run the stock clutch and clutch springs, nothing fancy there.
since running it last, i have lightened the variator a bit and installed lighter front forks. i will also be opening up the boost ports to be two more transfers before running it again.
the next race is sep 6! i am running out of time!

i’ve used both the malossi variator (lots of belt slip and hard to start) and the polini. i also prefer the polini. i stripped out the inner shaft that the outer variator cheek slides on due to the massive torque my motor makes, the polini one is harder. that’s the big reason i like the polini better.. and that it starts easier.

i love the malossi crankshaft. it has served me well so far, and it matches your cases. though other brands may work too, these were designed to work together.

yes, it sounds to me like the freewheel on your rear wheel is faulty. it is the same as a bmx bicycle, and you can replace it with a smaller one to get a better pedaling ratio.
a lot of kids in europe like to remove the pedals and install foot pegs, but most kids in the usa make fun of bikes with pegs and no pedals. it’s funny how different it all is!

1.7 seems a little big, but it is not uncommon for kits to have a large squish when stock. it should be between .7 and 1 from what i’ve read
