Inspired by some of Your own!
~M28 mei 2014 om 12:02 #148231I hope I’m wrong but the inlet looks kind of big.
There’s a possibility that the crankshaft won’t be able to close it off.I can also see some scratches to the place where your bottom gasket should be.
Hopefully these scatches aren’t too deep, otherwise it might leak.
Next to that, the right side of the bottom image shows a fairly small edge to clasp your gasket.
It might be enough, but there’s a possibility your gasket will blow out.Still, I hope I’m wrong…
Welkom op ons forum!
Breng een bezoekje aan mijn Ciao project.28 mei 2014 om 17:11 #147631I think it’s pretty good(inlet i mean), also connect this inlet to me well.
Maybe a better picture of the inlet?
28 mei 2014 om 17:41 #148230The upper side (left on the picture) looks a bit to far to the edge. Have you tried putting a crankshaft in and see if it closes off the inlet completely?
28 mei 2014 om 17:53 #148210Inlet does seal (I do have the bike put together and running already (http://vespa-ciao.nl/forums.php?m=posts&q=34469). Here is a better picture of the inlet window:

I have made one too wide before to where I could see light coming around the side of the crank lobe, so on this one I left at least 1mm overlap on each side. The previous crank broke after I hit my variator on something and rubbed against the sealing surface as well, but it still seems to seal pretty well. This was My excuse to go ‘big’ on the case porting this time around.

Gaskets seem to seal ok, I use fiber gasket and coat it in RTV. I did find a leak a the carb mounting so I filled the slot in the clamp with rtv behind the shim, and that seems to have helped.
Main air leak seems to be at the exhaust pipe clamp, I’ve had three different brands of Vespa exhausts and none of them will seal unless I use some copper RTV on the flange, and then it’ll still leak black goo. I figure that’s just how it is. How important is the exhaust seal, and what do You guys do to get a good one?
Thanks,
~M28 mei 2014 om 23:55 #148232to stop the leaking at the flange, you can use exhaust paste. here in the Netherlands we have a brand called Bosal, that makes ‘cement’ for exhausts. mostly used by car mechanics. but a vespa exhaust can be sealed with it also!

this will eliminate the black goo accumulating at the bottom of your flange.
29 mei 2014 om 04:51 #148233Interesting, I’ve never seen that, I will have to try it. I assume it does not set completely solid like metal epoxy/jb-weld, and you can remove the exhaust and re-apply fairly easily?
Thanks!
~M29 mei 2014 om 10:50 #148234Yes, when you remove youre exhaust you remove the paste also, and re-apply it when you mount the exhaust back!
29 mei 2014 om 12:55 #148235@maciek,
correct! if you let it harden for 20 minutes, start up the engine (let it idle) so the paste can harden even more, it creates an airtight seal. and it’s brittle, so you can ‘break’ it loose fairly easy.
