      Hi,
I run a ciao with variator and the malossi gears, the engine is a 75cc polini on a malossi block+crank and 19mm dellorto. Exhaust is fabrizi. These things work fine and have been worn in well.

A recurring problem I’ve been having is that the starter shoes are not gripping well to turn the engine fast enough for a start. It causes problems with very rich starts and overly wet plugs. I got a new clutch from JMPB and I know these new clutches are generally assembled with the shoes the wrong way, this is not the issue.

I’ve tried filing the shoes down, manually wearing them in spinning the clutch with a power drill and replacing them with new ones (not the ones shipped in the clutch). I’ve removed the springs for the shoes. I don’t see any gear oil leaking in from the axle. Only thing I found working a little is regularly spraying sticky belt spray to increase the grip of the shoes, but this is a real shitty solution ofc.

I suspect the racing gears are causing this by turning the clutch slower compared to the original gearing. But I’d rather keep the malossi gears.. Anyone got any good ideas how to improve this? How do you guys handle this?

This problem also occurs wen you mount a small poeli.

You can take the springs out and it will improve slightly.
I started training on the running track. which also helped.
A powerful degreaser helps to get more grip.

The ultimate solution for me was to mount a pull start, which I think is really ideal.
No more starting problems and less rotating weight on the shaft.

I’m going to try weighing the shoes down some, using fishing lead weights or something. Ideally I would just have a freewheel there, but that’s not something I’m able to build and it might not survive those rpms anyway.
