Question to HPI inner rotor ignition

this ignition set from JMPB does have a CDI unit and a ignition coil.

I have not much experience with ignitions, but I thought that a contact ignition has a ignition coil and a electronic ignition has a CDI unit.

Does anybody know for what both is necessary in the HPI set?

You need both on this set. The CDI which holds the 2 or 1 curves and the ignition coil. In this case, there is only one curve availble I thought. You can buy seperate boxes which hold different curves. Or even a programmable one.
This type of ignition looks like a Berini for instance.

On an original Piaggio motor the cdi unit also contains the ignition coil. They are combined as one.
