I just wanted to share my racer project, called “Plan B” that I built for the Polini Cup races in Atwater, California. It’s definitely not finished, but built for now.

Nice job on the side-inlet construction! Is that a kart-carb?

Is the engine powerful enough to compete? Have you modified your ports?

        Thanks for sharing.

            looks very nice,
you did a lot of trouble fitting that side-inlet
with all the welding and cutting in the bridge!
Did you reinforce your bridge after the cutting?

I’m also curious about the performence?

Nice Race-Si with the Malossi colours. I specifically like that your Si has a monoshock installed. Do they came with the moped at the time off import?
And also what type of Polini cylindres are allowed in this Cup?

Thanks for the comments! The bike is a 1980 Vespa Si and it does have the stock monoshock that came with it. The custom intake was a lot of fun to put together, but installing it in the subframe required considerable cutting. A aluminum support strut has been installed to provide proper rigidity. I’m using a 63cc Polini Cylinder which has been ported and modified. Currently, the performance is very poor. The carburetor -a Tillotson HL360- is designed for 80-100cc Karts and needs to be adjusted for jetting and proper fuel pumping. Additionally, I’m using 17″ wheels along with the Malossi overdrive gear set, so the bike has very bad acceleration. The Polini Cup class I race has an ‘open’ qualification, so you can run any cylinder under 90cc’s on any moped, provided it originally had pedals and no manual shift. Currently, Honda Hobbit/Caminos and Derbis are the fastest machines, but the Vespas aren’t far behind. I have until April to get Plan B up to race speed. Here is the current port map:

that monoshock is great 😀 I want that too.
but very dissapointing that the performence isn`t there.
                  kick some honda ass 😀

all of the hondas are running derbi and puch kits! they are nearly untouchable! i was placing ok on my ciao with a modified pinasco, but the derbi motors/kits are just too fast! i can’t keep up either!
i’m afraid i am retiring the ciao from racing next year. i think i am going to build some kind of crazy bike with lots of parts coming from lots of different mopeds!
nerd speed will probably be the only vespa on the track next year! kind of sad, really.. 🙁
awesome job on this build josh, i was sooo stoked to finally see you and the bike out on the track! i waited all season for it! even though the performance was poor, i know it’s going to be a whole different bike next year! i can’t wait!

oh, ps, did you remove the blue ring from your variator, or did it fly off? i know i told you mine flew off like 3 times and i ended up leaving it off all together

I’m having thoughts about going sprinting with a vespa for a couple of years now and I do have to admit that it can’t be done with the origiginal 3taps enginehousing.

I have been looking for enginehousings small enough to fit in a ciao frame and I have found one with a membrame inlet. It is from a Peugeot 103.

There even exist a polini version of the carters and you might be able to fit an LC cilinder from a scooter on it.

Just some Idea’s to keep you racing vespa ! Vepsa for live! (even if you know that the engine, gearbox, variomatic, frame and brakes are rubbish )

Just a further update…. During the last year, I built (with some friends help of course) a custom subframe for this bike. Then My friends went absolutely nuts creating a custom exhaust pipe.

Cool stuff. I would use a heatshield!

                                How does the pipe perform?
