When trying to find a misfire problem I discovered that the crankshaft can be moved laterally (that is in and out in the direction where the flywheel sits) ~1 mm.

I guess this isn’t as it should be? the crnask still spins easily without any problens so does it indicate broken crankshaft bearings?

        It doesnt indicate broken bearings.
It does however indicate wear on the fit between the bearing and the crankshaft or between the bearing and the carter.
        Or both.

Finally dismantled the engine and it was excessive wear on the carter, I could easily remove the bearings without heating the carter.
Inspecting the carter it looks like it was sandblasted which probably removed to much material in the bearing seat.
