I have my doubts, i don’t think it is the CDI….
You tested that your spark plug sparks? (unscrew the sparkplug, put it against the cilinderhead and run).

Keep in mind this is not a regular vespa engine (membran, phbg carb which needs choke, not leaking near the carburator).

                  Hi Hansieb
yes spark plug sparks no problem at all, a nice clear blue spark.
Yes it is a membran engine as you say and i have the manual choke connected, are these engines bad to start then ?
The carb is leaking a bit where the gasket is, just on one side though would this definitley have an effect on starting the bike ?
i can see you got the same engine as me how did you start yours when you first built it ?
                  thanks
                  Giuseppe

Then nevermind the CDI, if it sparks nicely you don’t need to replace it.

Things to keep in mind at a reedvalve engine:
                    – Choke is connected well (cold starting a rv, needs most of the time usage of the choke).
                    – Carb is installed properly
                    – Decompression is installed (cilinderhead which decompresses the cilinder to start or turn of the engine easy).

For the first start benzine needs to flow to the cilinder. To help the engine a bit you can spray some very flameable stuff (just check what you have deodorant for example) in the cilinderhead, then screw the sparkplug back on.

It should atleast give a few kicks because the flameable stuff ignites.

                    I checked this topic: http://vespa-ciao.nl/forums.php?m=posts&q=15562
Jet 80 should be fine if i see tonni his setup.

                    Bad carburator + bad ignition

                      Hi Hansieb
thanks for the information you have provided.
ok i will check everything again and see what i can do.
are you supposed to spray deodorant in the cylinder ? no surely not..
i will also check the piston just in case for some reason it hits the head.
i have noticed one thing though when i pull the decompression lever it doesn’t seem to make any difference, maybe i need to tighten this up too.
                      thanks

                        Giuseppe :
                        6V or 12V please ?

CDI is CDI.. There’s no point about talking 6/12Volt when we are talking about the ignition circuit 😉
Can the petrol flow freely from tank to carb? NO issues in this circuit?

yes petrol flows just fine i checked that.
i have just been told that the guy i bought the malossi block from is that he may of given me the wrong reed block, so after all that could well be the cause it doesn’t want to start.
                          thanks
