Hi guys, new to the forum and the ciao! Glad to be here though.
I bought a ciao mix in a box of bits at the end of March, with the hope of getting it going again. It’s a 1999 Isle of white model. Think it’s the same as the Dutch.
I can’t find an English workshop manual anywhere, but I’m missing a fair few parts anyway.
I have literally no mechanic experience, never really had any projects or done work myself on any of the cars or bikes I’ve had. Always taken them to a garage.
I’ve got a couple of questions.
I’ve not got far with the ciao at all so far, but I’ve been buying parts off jmpb ebay.it and so far have:
Polini 46 piston + cylinder new (bravo polini head) 12mm
DR 43 kit
2 x 12mm mazzucchelli cranks
13 and 19mm dellorto carbs
Giannelli fire exhaust
Polini top one exhaust
I’m hoping to get a hold of a used polini evo engine case set to put the 46mm polini head on but right now I have the standard Piaggio ciao mix cases.
I’m pretty sure it’s the oil pump attached to the side casing. But as I said no workshop manual and I’m no mechanic.
Is there an easy way to remove the pump and run on premix or will I need a new side case?
The brass hose attachment has snapped inside the oil pump and I haven’t been able to get it out, so it’s useless as it is.
I’m not scared to start matching the casings. I have my dremel at the ready and I’m making time in the upcoming weeks to really get at it.
Thanks for any help and advice.

You can remove the oil pump without any problems, although you have to keep in mind that you ought to close off the brass flange you already mentioned (as otherwise it will suck air through the nozzle and thus have an influence on the fuel mixture) and use premixed fuel.
For now, you could modify the inlet and ports of your standard casings to match with the DR EVO. This, combined with the Gianelli should make you go well past 70 km/h.
Could you post a picture of your ciao? I’m curious =)
9 mei 2016 om 20:43 #146771It’s actually in my mother’s garage. I only have a shed and it has my honda zb50 and pc50 in. I have the engine here though. I’ll fly over to hers tomorrow and take a few pics on my way home from work. <img src="
” />Update only a little over a week later…
Okay guys so I’ve tried to seal the brass flange with a bit of solder but I’m worried it may not hold. Any suggestions? Here’s some photos of the ciao mix. Sorry I didn’t take them all out the box. Had loads on top…

photo hostingI’ve put that on hold for a bit now anyhow. Last Wednesday I bought a 1974 ciao as a project and haggled the guy down to only £85. He was selling as spares/repair.
I’ve decided to use this bike for my setup to get going a bit quicker. On Sunday I took the engine out, took off the flywheel, dismantled the points and coils. Took the head, cylinder and piston out, separated the carters, took the crank out and gave them all a good clean. Everything looks good. I brought the casings home and put my DR gasket on and marked what I needed to take off:
