Hello there, my name is Ismael and I’m from Mexico, recently I get a 1983 vespa ciao, it has been a lot of fun.
A couple of days ago I started it as usual (pedaling and pressing the decompressor) and after it started, the pedals kept spinning, of course I said to myself WTF! I turn it off and try again with the same result, at the third try it was ok (which made me happy) but after that I heard some crunches on the pedals and rear wheel.
The next day when I started I heard the same crunches so I decided to remove the pedals and the noise stoped. Later in the afternoon, in the road back from work, it started stopping; just like when the decompressor is pressed down, barely I didn’t get run off, so I made it home.
The next day I put more gas on it, just in case, and tried starting it with no sucess = ( I try starting it and it starts but it turns off and when it starts sometimes the pedals keep spinning as I accelerate.
Can somebody help me? My conclussion is that there must be something on the clutch that isn’t working as it should be, am I right?
Any help will be appreciated.

I think your problem is the component of you raer wheel.
It could be that the nipple to cycle / walk is partly pushed in.

yes, it sounds to me like the freewheel on your rear wheel is faulty. it is the same as a bmx bicycle, and you can replace it with a smaller one to get a better pedaling ratio.
a lot of kids in europe like to remove the pedals and install foot pegs, but most kids in the usa make fun of bikes with pegs and no pedals. it’s funny how different it all is!
