Well, finally I present you my current project – Ciao R (SL)
FRAME
The basis was alright, but the fork, handle bar, fenders, wheels and several other things did not meet my requirements. So I replaced them with new (old) original or custom parts.

I was inspired by the old Mercedes 300 SL “silver arrows” as well as the old Auto Union racecars, so I took this as the project’s motto. Thats’s where the little “SL” comes from.

The first subgoal was to engineer a screwable frame reinforcement. Marc’s prototypical strut bar was the perfect model, thanks again, mate!

Custom made spacers for the luggage rack to grant more stability at the assembly points.

Et voilà, trés sportif!

Furthermore I only used new wear parts and special parts, e.g. the steering head bearings, rear plate bearings, stainless steel screws/bolts with Loctite, tires, Pinasco fork springs, fork plain bearings, etc. For this I took (new) original parts, custom or “racing” parts to improve the whole chassis. Plenty more pictures are coming, soon!

ENGINE
I have thought a lot about which engine would be suitable to this project and decided that a nice and powerful “understatement” motor with square hub (43mm cilinder diameter and 43mm piston stroke) will match good to the motto. Moreover I put high emphasis on precision and performance with optimal durability to withstand the upcoming trips like the VCT.

The setup:
– 43mm Eurocilindro Racing with LC Kit
– Vespa Piaggio blinker engine housing tuned
– Vespa Piaggio crankshaft tuned
– optimized contact ignition with lightweight flywheel
– (I will replace the contacts with a pickup later on and try some things with HPI and NGK ignition parts)
– 13/13 Dell Orto carburator with Malossi RED filter
– D.N.performance exhaust
– 1:9 Malossi vario transmission
– 100 mm vario clutch with Leo CNC-clutch bell
– Polini Speed Control
I will keep you updated, folks!
25 september 2014 om 19:49 #269658Always nicely crafted projects!
I like the screwable torsion bar.
25 september 2014 om 20:32 #269659@ Edjuh: Thank you! It was mainly made by MofaFreak.
Here are some impressions from the engine:

The ports open well and the piston exactly leaves the whole outlet port free.

The engine did run the first kms but is dismounted yet, because I will try to make an electronic ignition out of the contact ignition like I mentioned in the first post on top (setup). To fit the ports I used quality two components epoxyplastic, which is proven in racing and daily use. By the way I did not break through the engine housing at any point, this really was milling-limbo. :lol
If everything works I will probably mount a Pinasco flyheel for contact ignition.I will make some pictures of the frame work and painting in the next days and upload them with the ones of the progress.
26 september 2014 om 04:59 #270251your inlet looks a bit to the max 😉
nice job on milling that cases 😀
schould be able to make some real bone braeking speedsDe budget beun tjoener: geen geld is te duur of het werkt nog niet
Link naar Mijn collectie / Projecten.26 september 2014 om 07:39 #270548Nice Jocko, love the engine, looks like a winner

Can’t wait to see the rest of your Ciao R (sl)
Succes 😉
TICKLING BARN27 september 2014 om 10:23 #271367@ ritze: I hope so! 🙂 Thank you! The inlet is ported as in my VCT ’09 / ’14 engine which still runs good. The “blow-through test” was alright, too, and the engine runs nice. So I don’t worry.
@ Crullie: Thanks! You do not have to wait long. 😉
FRAME
After the parts were sandblasted I wanted to paint them with the original ’55 300 SL Uhlenhaut Cuopé colour, but this is really hard to find. So I took RAL 9007 “grey-aluminum”.

I love the different light reflections and the gloss in the colour! After the painting was done it was finished with two layers of clearcoat.

You can especially see it on the aluminum cilinder cover.

Chaos… 😀

The screwable reinforcement bar perfectly fits between the bearing plate and the front cover and the tank strip ends 2 mm ahead of it – tailor made.

It is all in the details! The “silverarrow” comes with Red details like the Pinasco fork springs, saddle spring, choke button, NGK ignition cable, fuel hose, etc.

Yeah, I know it is crazy, but I love details even if you do not see them directly…

WHEELS
I can not tell how happy I am to got nice looking and straight running Bernardi Mozzi 17″ rims! =)

Unfortunately I did not get the Pirelli ML 12 in 17″ which would have matched better to the motto. So I decided to take the Continental ContiGo! with Continental tubes after I visited a Continental production facility and some people recommended them to me.

I love the look of it as if it is milled from one piece.

If you drive fast you need good brakes! The difference between original Piaggio (top) and Newfren (below) is remarkable.

ENGINE
Here it is good to see that the Eurocilindro requires the full potential of the engine housing.

And a few more impressions after I milled the housing:

I will upload the next steps in the following days and take new pictures of the finished frame. Stay tuned…!
27 september 2014 om 10:30 #271407So i’ll hope you would not use these Newfren brakes. These will mess up your Bernardi Mozzi’s from the inside and the brake capacity is not that much better.
The Ciao looking good now and how hard was it ti fit the stronger Pinasco springs?
27 september 2014 om 10:32 #271409Thanks for the advice!
Why do they mess up the Mozzis from the inside? So you would take the original brakes? To mount the Pinasco springs was horrible. I did not expect them to be that hard.. You better fit them in with a buddy.
PS. To srew in the Pinasco springs I was forced to mill the other parts a bit. Otherwise they did not fit in. No plug and play.
27 september 2014 om 10:38 #271410Nice work!!

Your better off with the brakes “ferodo” wich they sell on the site here..;)27 september 2014 om 10:44 #271470Alright, thank you! Can you please tell me what’s wrong with the Newfren brakes? Just out of interest..
Luckily I did not drove this much and fast yet.27 september 2014 om 10:47 #271471They mess up the break-metal inside the rims..
28 september 2014 om 10:34 #271477I really appreciate this advice! Thank you, mates. I just dismounted the wheels to get rid of the Newfren brakes.
I have seen the rear brakes here, but where can I get Ferodo (or other good manufactor’s) brakes for the front wheel with 90mm housing? Here’s just some wierd stuff of my detail-keenness. 😀

Original Piaggio sticker from the side covers reglued:

Red clip for the step:
28 september 2014 om 10:36 #271479The details look really nice!
(The Ferodo breakings are available in the VC Shop on the website 😉 )
46 Pinasco, Malossi RV, Schijfrem, Fox Vario
Gele Racefrikandel28 september 2014 om 10:57 #271480The Bernardi Mozzi’s come with there own hub for the frontwheel. These have good brakepads on them which you can use without any problem.
28 september 2014 om 11:21 #271518Nice project jocko looking forward to see more progress !
