      Hello to all vespa specialists
I’m having problems with my Si and hope you can help me diagnose it.
      First of all some information:
      1996 Si kick start
      Stock Cylinder & Head
12.12 Carb with high flow filter and slightly bigger jet
      Polini UTHA variator
      Older simonini pipe (not extreme)
      New Drive Belt
      Denso Iridium Plug (almost new)

first of all here is a picture of my plug after a “plug chop”

      and here are two videos
      the motor idliling and accelarting
      the variator working

I feel somthing is not working, accelaration is almost ok, but my top speed is worse then it used to be, i can not make more then 40kph even going down road doesnt go above 50.
also when going up road the speed drops down to 25-30kph and i feel it’s very hard to keep speed

I hope you guys can give some advice.

      Thanks
      Eran

I don’t see a problem, you have a 50cc and a polini utah variator, you shouldn’t expect more than the max of 50.
Variator transmission often cuts down on top speed compared to pulley trans.

        If you want advice:

        -Work your inlet
        -Get a speedy kit
        -Proper variator(speedcontrol/multivarp)
-Don’t know about your exhaust but perhaps there’s a better option

        Plug looks excellent.

        greets

The V-belt of your variator is not in the right position at the back clutch. Your V-belt must be laying on top of your 90mm pully’s. Solution: You need to shift your engine to the back untill the V-belt is in the right position. You will gain some speed and accelaration by this.

and are you having the limitation ring in the front variator ? If so remove it 😉
and indeed what ”Eidos” says its too deep inside the pulley’s

Thanks for the advice so far, I do plan to get a kit+carb+inlet in the future.
i removed the limiter ring from the variator when i installed the polini unit, but i dont see that the belt is moving all the way up in the pulley.

eidos: how can i move the engine back? the two front bolts have some “play” for moving but the third bolt at back doesnt have (i think).
also, wont moving the motor back make the v-belt to loose?, it looks to me not very tight right now.
waht do think about the way the motor sounds? it’s not working very stable and at the very end of the throttle it sound starnge too? (this is in the first video)

              Thanks again

It doesn’t have to be tight as with pulley transmission. As said; in normal stance the belt must be level with your pulleys, or slightly higher, this gives ideal variation range.

The 3 mounts should have the same amount of slack. Also, don’t forget the exhaust fixture.

                ps. saw the movies,

                -lower your jet 2 sizes
-won’t it idle if you give it less juice?
-motor sounds alright though, just a bit rich
-maybe the variator needs different weights? not that I can tell, but I don’t know if you tried.

                Nice cnc router!! homebuilt?

Yes it’s home built but it’s not finished yet since my PC paralel port burned and also my fake dremel, so the project is on hold.

until i get another jet can i drill another hole or two in my air filter?
and also: does the mixture settings of idle effect full throttle too?

Jetting is for full throttle, our carburators are just that simple. Sometimes this means jetting is too rich for idling, but with variator it usually just blasts past that stuttering point. In most cases it’s not a problem.

You can drill holes yes, as a temporary measure.

I should get into those homemade cnc things, nice for woodworking projects.

                      A lttle update,
I didnt remember what jet i was using so today i took of the carburator and found out it’s a 66, so i switched to 60 and the motor sounds better.
i also checked and my engine is all the way back so i’m in a problem hoe to make the belt ride higher on the rear pulley.
it’s strange beacause it’s the same belt size i had before.
                      any ideas?

I think there are 3 options:

                        -enlarge the slots
                        -mount a 100mm pulley clutch
                        -change the belt

I’d try running it anyway, maybe it’s not a big deal and it runs fine.

eventually i will put a kit and bigger carb on it
